Salamander Lantern Frame

Salamander lantern, I did the frame and someone else will finish it. The eyes are a plastic Christmas ornament, the kind that snaps together, painted black.

The latest addition to the family

This little lantern is made of the seed pods from the plant Lunaria annua, commonly known as honesty, money plant or silver dollar. The fins are Zea mays, commonly known as corn husks. Tonight there was a lantern parade for the Winter Solstice and all my lanterns went out to celebrate.

Making of the Snow Queen

First I made a cardboard base, then added a layer of clay. Paper mache was applied over the clay base (which was covered in plastic wrap) to make a 'mask'. The mask was pulled off the clay and used as the final head piece, which needs to be as light as possible. My paper mache dried all funny;it buckled a bit. Hopefully I'll work out some of the technical glitches for the next one.

I made a giant carnival puppet costume for the Parade of Lost Souls this year. This was my first attempt at something on this scale. The head is a bit bumpy but I was pretty proud of it. You can't tell from the pictures, but she's 8 feet tall. My head is behind the lace. As one observer so elegantly put it, "Her boobs are talking!"

Had a great day at the zoo; I was there five hours and I would have stayed longer if my back hadn't hurt so much! I was also pretty upset after learning about all the endangered species at the zoo---pretty much EVERY ANIMAL THERE!

My Compartment

I mentioned before I took part in the Compartments Compartments project. This is my contribution: 27 hand-drawn postcards of rabbits. Looking forward to hiding it, and tracking it on the website. The idea is that the finder of the compartment gets to keep the treasure inside, and they are encouraged to refill the box with something of their own for someone else to find.

Vancouverites: be on the lookout for white boxes!

I participated in the Compartment Compartments project today; these rabbit drawings are only 12 of the 27 handdrawn 4x6 'Jacqrabbits' cards I made for my box. Now the fun part: I will leave the box somewhere in the city for someone to discover and adopt.

I really liked making these cards, and I think I'll do more.

No posts all this past week because I was volunteering for the Illuminares Lantern Procession put on by Public Dreams Society. I made the blue building on the right, in the bottom picture, in the city of lanterns. I can fit inside of it. It took hours and hours to make.

All four of my lanterns were in the hourly procession, that would be six times they led the parade. I am wearing some kind of crazy fire-fairy get-up for some reason.

This is a mural I did in 2002 in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. I revisited it last year to do some touch-ups and took some photos. I think I can paint a lot better now! It's not everyone who can say their first painting was 63 feet long.
